The Heart of
Clockwork Brewhouse

Established in 2014, Clockwork Brewhouse was born out of a love for brewing and experimenting with new approaches and styles [citation:3]. Brewing beer is our passion, and we are lucky enough to also call it our profession.

At the brewery, we strive for quality before quantity. We aim to make beer an experience, not just a beverage. The name "Clockwork" describes our meticulous and organised approach to brewing, combined with a preference for old-fashioned, traditional beer styles [citation:11].

Our beers aim to be full of flavour yet still easy drinking — a balance that defines our craft.

Meticulous &
Organised

Our philosophy is rooted in precision and passion. We believe that great beer is a product of meticulous attention to detail and a fearless spirit of experimentation.

“We aim to make beer an experience, not just a beverage.”

From the selection of malts to the timing of hop additions, every decision is made with flavour and drinkability in mind. We prefer traditional styles but are not afraid to innovate.

Understanding Your Beer

Beers are rated by colour, alcohol content, and flavour — here's what it all means.

Colour & Clarity

SRM Scale
Standard Reference Method for beer colour. Lighter beers score low (1), dark stouts score 35–40.
Pale 1 Amber Dark 40

Alcohol Content

ABV %
Alcohol by Volume — the standard measure of how much alcohol is in the beer, expressed as a percentage of total volume.
Light 2% Mid 6% Strong 12%

Flavour & Bitterness

Hops 🌿
Subjective & varied — adding different hops during the brewing process creates bitterness, aroma and taste from the oils of the female hop vine.
Subtle Balanced Bold

Where Flavour Comes Alive

What you taste are the oils from the female flower of the hop vine — bitterness, aroma and taste depend on when they enter the kettle.

Timing is everything. Hops added early in the boil contribute bitterness, while late additions and dry-hopping bring aroma and flavour.

Our beers are full of flavour yet easy drinking. We balance malt and hop character with a clean finish — a hallmark of our brewing philosophy [citation:11].

From citrusy and floral to earthy and spicy, the hop profiles in our beers are as diverse as the South African landscape that inspires us.
